November 19, 2012 — Cats and Dogs International (CANDi), upon returning from its eighth Cancun, Mexico clinic this week, reports that it has broken its previous record for sterilizing more stray dogs and cats in a five-day period than during any of its previous clinics.

“This was an extremely successful trip for us, our best yet,” said Darci Galati, CANDi International President and Founder. “With the help of our partners, we helped prevent literally millions of unwanted animals from living on the street and enduring lives of suffering.”

Founded in 2006, CANDi is a nonprofit organization that works with the travel industry and local governments at tourism destinations to promote the humane treatment of animals, and to provide free sterilization programs where there are often no resources to help control animal overpopulation. While it’s an issue not many think of, it has become a huge problem for the industry, communities and tourists. Statistics on the number of strays that are suffering near these resorts are staggering. It is estimated that at the tourist destination of Cancun alone, there are more than 1 million stray dogs.

CANDi’s programs, to date, have focused in Cancun where they have sterilized more than 6,500 cats and dogs. CANDi’s work has attracted help from organizations like RIU Hotels & Resorts and celebrities such as actor/comedian George Lopez, who helped to fund the recent clinic in honor of Richard Pryor, the late comedian’s wife, Jennifer Lee Pryor, and her organization Pryor’s Planet.

“George’s generosity brought me to tears, knowing how much Richard cared about ending the suffering of animals and helping people,” Pryor said. The goal of this clinic was to empower the local community of Cancun to humanely reduce stray animal populations through spay/neuter.

Animal sterilization is the key to ending the cycle of suffering for these stray animals. By spaying and neutering more than 1,500 cats and dogs at this clinic through the generous support of George Lopez and Pryor’s Planet, CANDi continues its global mission to provide the only stray population management solution that is sustainable and humane.
