My Experience of Saving a Puppy From Cancun
*Loud Whistle* "Alejandro, Come Here"!! Those have become words I shout on a daily basis and every time I do this little black dog comes sprinting at me with everything he's got. And no matter how many times I see the same scene play out I can't help but smile and give a little chuckle.
On my most recent vacation to Mexico (and on all my travels) I was really saddened by the number of dogs wandering around in horrible condition without homes or owners. I wanted to do something about it by taking one of the dogs back to the US. So I did a google search for "animal shelter cancun" and a few links down was RAP. From there I contacted the most selfless person I have ever met, Maria Alicia Salgado. Not enough can be said about what she does and who she is. She is the Mother Teresa of dog rescue! Melody Nichols from CANDI was also a tremendous help sorting out technicalities and providing useful information. Both of these women are true heroes.
I hung out with Maria, Alejandro (the resident Vet), and 60 plus dogs at the shelter in Cancun for a day and drove around with Maria doing errands. I really wanted a puppy and it just so happened that they had 3. The first one that ran up to me was the one I ended up taking home, a curious little pup named after the Vet. Alejandro the Vet lives full time at the shelter with the dogs and gives himself completely to these animals 7 days a week. So he is probably like the Male Mother Teresa of dog rescue. Maria and Melody made sure everything went smooth on the day of my flight and that Alejandro would make it back without any legal complications. It was really a painless procedure and I can't wait to do it again. I urge anyone who is in a position to help RAP or CANDI to do so in any way possible. You can donate time, money or supplies to either of these life saving organizations.
